Signers of Cato Institute 2009 Letter to Obama on Climate

My blog 'Green Herring' back to Faces of Climate Science start page

The conservative 'think tank' The Cato Institute ran full page ads in several major daily newspapers headlined "With all due respect, Mr. President, that is not true" challenging President Obama's statement in his inaugural speech that "Few challenges facing America and the world are more urgent than combating climate change. The science is beyond dispute and the facts are clear."
I have listed publication and citation stats for all 115 signers. Note the following:

Ranked by number of articles mentioning 'climate' as found by Google Scholar, the median number of climate articles for the signers is just 5. Compare this to the overall list (including skeptics) where the median for all names with stats completed is 53 climate articles.
There are 71 of the 115 signers (61%) with fewer than ten climate articles, including 33 with none.
Ranked by number of citations to their work, just eleven signers (9.5% of the 115) have over 100 citations to their 4th most cited work, compared to 532 in the overall list (i.e. 26.7% of the 1987 names counted to date.)
The median number of citations to the author's fourth-most-cited work for the 1906 names with any cited works in the overall list is 55; for the Cato signers, the median is 11.
The 115 Cato signers include 24 who are either retired or emeritus, plus six whose listed qualification is their 'former' or 'past' position
Nine signers are affiliated with the petroleum industry and another six with the coal industry.
Other signers work in fields not particularly relevant to climate science, including market research, anthropology, drug chemistry, industrial chemistry, vehicle emissions testing, landslides, computer chip design, history, weed control, tuna ecology, plate tectonics, and abstract algebra.

Names are sorted in descending order of number of published works that match the word 'climate' in Google Scholar. This total could include non-refereed pieces such as commentary, editorials, or letters to the editor. (Note that citation stats were collected by hand, over a few months, so exact order might vary slightly as papers continue to gain citations as time passes.)

Anyone working in the field of climate science should have a significant number of hits on this search. The median number for IPCC wg1 authors is 93 articles; for all of the roughly 1800 authors I've checked up to July 2009, including skeptics, the median is 56. For the 386 names I've checked so far who were signers of a climate skeptics' statement, the median is two (2).

70% of the skeptics have fewer than 10 published works that mentions of climate and 60% have fewer than five. At the top of the rankings, there are 25 skeptics who have more than the overall median of 56 works mentioning 'climate', and just 12 above the IPCC median of 93.

In the overall list, there are 908 names with 56 or more works mentioning climate, and 593 names with at least 93 works. In this light, self-declared skeptics make up only 2.75% of the first group, or 2.03% of the second.
